Line 1 History, Facts & Expansion

  • Meerut Metro started operations on 22 February 2026, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the service.
  • Meerut Metro runs between Meerut South and Modipuram, covering the main urban stretch of Meerut.
  • The metro uses the same infrastructure as the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS, making Meerut the first place in India where metro and regional rapid transit operate on the same infrastructure.
  • Meerut Metro can operate at speeds of up to around 120 km/h, making it India's fastest metro system according to the government's announcement.
  • The complete Meerut Metro journey takes about 30 minutes, including scheduled stops along the route.
  • Meerut Metro is part of the 82-km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, which combines regional and city-level connectivity.
  • Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro can use the same stations, allowing passengers to switch between regional and local travel more conveniently.
  • Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram are among the Namo Bharat stations commissioned in Meerut as part of the completed corridor.
  • The integrated system provides faster intra-city travel within Meerut, while Namo Bharat provides faster regional travel towards Delhi.
  • The system is expected to reduce dependence on road transport and help reduce traffic congestion and vehicle-related emissions in the region.

Meerut Metro is expected to expand beyond its existing Meerut South–Modipuram corridor to provide better connectivity to more parts of the city. Additional metro corridors have been proposed, although their final alignment and implementation will depend on approval and preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
