Patna Metro Construction work History

On September 25, 2018, the Bihar government approved the establishment of Patna Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (PMRCL) to oversee and implement the Patna Metro project. To support its execution, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was appointed as the General Consultant (GC) by PMRCL. The Central Government granted approval for the project on February 6, 2019, and on February 17, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone.

In November 2019, DMRC announced modifications to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and the alignment of two lines. These changes included constructing a second interchange at Khemni Chowk, removing Line-1's depot at Aitwarpur, and adding two new stations at Ramkrishna Nagar and Jaganpura. To finance the project, DMRC plans to secure an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Groundwork for Phase 1 of the Patna Metro began in November 2020, with NCC starting initial preparations. Piling work commenced in December 2020. Although the original deadline for completing and opening the first section was August 2023, in the first phase, three stations were officially opened to commuters on October 6, 2025.

Work on Corridor 2 of the Patna Metro has entered a crucial phase, with tunneling officially beginning between PMCH station and Gandhi Maidan. The first tunnel boring machine (TBM) has already excavated approximately 20 meters, while preparations are underway for the second TBM to begin work. Officials expect the second machine to begin work within a week, completing the completion of this crucial section of the city's underground network.

Construction of two additional stations on the priority corridor of the Patna Metro Rail Project is nearing completion and is expected to open to passengers next month. Officials have confirmed that the newly constructed section will soon be inspected by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). Any issues found during the inspection will be resolved immediately, after which officials may announce a formal inauguration schedule. The project's progress was reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Sandeep Kumar R. Pudkalkatti, Secretary, Urban Development and Housing Department and Managing Director, Patna Metro Rail Corporation Limited (PMRCL), on Monday (January 12).

The Patna Metro expansion project is rapidly progressing to its final stages. Construction on two new stations, Khemnichak and Malahi Pakadi, is nearly complete, and they are expected to open by February 2026. Once inaugurated, the metro will run from ISBT to Bhootnath via Khemnichak to Malahi Pakadi, a total distance of 6.5 km. Currently, the metro only operates from ISBT to Zero Mile and Bhootnath.

A trial run of the water metro service took place in Patna on Sunday. The MV Gomadharkunwar, operated by the Inland Waterways Authority of India, sailed from Gaighat Jetty to NIT Ghat. Once final technical approval is received, the vessel will be handed over to the Tourism Development Corporation for operation.
