The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is currently constructing the Surat Metro, a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) designed to cater to the transportation needs of Surat, the second largest city in Gujarat. The project includes the development of two lines and a total of 37 stations.
Surat Metro Construction work:The Gujarat state government granted approval to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 1 of the Surat Metro project in January 2017. Subsequently, in March 2019, the Central Government's cabinet also gave its approval. The DPR, encompasses a network length of 40.35 km. Despite facing a deadline of August 2023, the completion and opening of the first section of the Surat Metro are now anticipated to occur in August 2027. The entire Phase 1 is projected to be finished by December 2027.
Phase 1 of the Surat Metro project encompasses a route length of 41.93 km. It will primarily be funded through a 50:50 equity partnership between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. Additionally, the project will secure loans from AFD and KfW (amount undisclosed), with discussions between GMRC and these financial institutions initiated in 2018. The pre-construction activities for Phase 1 of the Surat Metro commenced in the first quarter of 2021.
Surat Metro Fares (Ticket Prices)The fare structure, prices, and rules for Surat Metro have not yet been disclosed. These details will be determined and shared with the public as the commercial operations of the metro system approach. To ensure convenience for commuters, GMRC (Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation) intends to implement advanced technologies for its automatic fare collection (AFC) system. This will enable the use of QR codes and Near Field Communication (NFC) phones to access and utilize the fare collection system.

The engineers of J Kumar Infraprojects has started tunneling of 3.56 km underground strecth (Surat Railway Station – Chowk Bazar Ramp) of Surat Metro Rail Project, Phase 1. The Terratec make Ø 6.61m diameter refurbished earth pressure balance machine "nicknamed Diya" was commissioned last week at Surat Metro station for tunneling under Package UG2/CS3.
Surat Metro will have a total of 38 stations. Of these, 32 will be elevated and the remaining 6 will be underground. The first corridor (Red Line) will be spread over 21 km. It will have 15 km elevated section and 6.5 km underground section. There will be a total of 20 stations on the Red Line, while there will be 18 stations on the Green Line. All stations on the Green Line will be elevated.
