Violet Line History, Facts & Expansion
- The Violet Line is a part of Phase 2 of the Ahmedabad Metro project.
- The first part of the second phase covers a distance of 21 km and includes eight new metro stations.
- The line opened to the public on 17 September 2024.
- It will extend the North-South Corridor from Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar (23.838 km (14.812 mi)), with a branch line from Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) connecting Pandit Deendayal Urja University (PDEU) and GIFT City (5.416 km).
- The project is developed by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) in collaboration with the state and central governments.
- The new extension will dramatically reduce travel time between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, which are about 25 km apart.
- Commuters will be able to travel from APMC to GIFT City in less than an hour at a fare of approximately ₹35. Services from Sector 1 Metro Station to Motera Stadium Metro Station will run from 7:20 am to 6:40 pm.
- Trains running between GNLU Metro Station and GIFT City Metro Station will be available from 8:20 am to 6:25 pm.
Ahmedabad Metro Violet Line extended to Phase 2
Under Phase 2B, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to extend the Violet Line to build a 6 to 10 km long elevated circular loop within GIFT City. The project is estimated to cost ₹2,000 crore (US$240 million). The project is expected to add four to six metro stations to connect various precincts of the city.
