About Sikandar Bagh
The history of Sikandar Bagh is interesting and multi-layered. Originally built by Nawab Saadat Ali Khan II, the garden served as a recreational venue for the royal family and court. Its layout and architecture incorporated Mughal style design elements, including terraced lawns, fountains and pavilions. However, Sikandar Bagh is perhaps best known for its association with the Indian Rebellion of 1857. During the Rebellion, the garden became a stronghold for Indian rebels who faced the forces of the British East India Company. The fierce and brutal Battle of Sikandar Bagh took place within its walls, resulting in the loss of a large number of lives. This garden, once a symbol of beauty and relaxation, became a grim witness to the struggle for independence.
Architecture of Sikandar Bagh
Sikandar Bagh is spread over 150 acres and its architecture reflects its Mughal influence, with terraced lawns, a central baradari (pavilion), fountains and arched gateways. The design of the garden has been carefully planned and reflects the aesthetics of the Mughal period.
