About Sikandar Bagh

Sikandar Bagh is a historic garden-fort complex located in Gokhale Vihar in Lucknow's Civil Lines. It was built in 1800 by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruler of Awadh. Designed as a fortified residence and pleasure garden, it served as a summer retreat and a symbol of royal wealth and power. Spread over approximately 15 acres, Sikandar Bagh showcases a blend of Mughal and Awadhi architectural styles. Its distinctive features include high walls, ornamental pavilions, fountains, and landscaped gardens that combine aesthetics with defensive planning. The site is historically significant for its role in the 1857 rebellion and is today a major cultural and tourist attraction in Lucknow, drawing both historians and tourists.

Architecture of Sikandar Bagh

Sikandar Bagh reflects the Awadhi architectural style with strong Mughal influence, combining beauty with defense. It was built during the reign of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah (1797–1856) and shows the Nawabi love for enclosed gardens and decorative leisure spaces. The complex is mainly constructed using brick and lime plaster, with thick and strong walls for protection. Its design follows a symmetrical garden layout surrounded by fortified walls, showing a careful balance between artistic elegance and military planning.

  • Perimeter walls with bastions and decorative gateways
  • Main central pavilion for royal events and gatherings
  • Smaller pavilions and kiosks for leisure and relaxation
  • Water fountains and reservoirs used for garden irrigation
  • Stepwells and drainage channels showing advanced engineering
