About Gyarah Murti

Gyarah Murti is located at the T-junction of Sardar Patel Marg and Mother Teresa Crescent in New Delhi. It was commissioned in 1972 to remember the non-violent Salt March of 1930 led by Mahatma Gandhi. Created by sculptor Devi Prasad Roy Chowdhury, the installation shows Gandhi followed by ten figures, representing the diverse people of India united in the freedom struggle. The monument is 26 metres long and 3 metres high and holds great cultural importance as a visual tribute to national unity and civil disobedience. Situated in an open urban space near heritage sites, it remains a prominent landmark for tourists, students, and history enthusiasts.

Architecture of Gyarah Murti

Gyarah Murti was created by the famous sculptor Devi Prasad Roy Chowdhury. Its style represents 20th-century Sculptural Realism, showing dynamic movement and individual figures to honor the Dandi March. Work on the project began in 1972 and was completed in 1975 by his students and colleagues after his death. The memorial was built after India’s independence under the supervision of the Indian government, reflecting nationalist themes and thoughtful urban planning. The design emphasizes the unity and determination of the people, combining artistic expression with public space planning, making it both a historical tribute and a landmark in Delhi.

The monument comprises the following structural and design elements:

  • Main bronze statue depicting eleven INA leaders in marching formation
  • Granite plinth forming the base, integrating inscriptions of names and dates
  • Surrounding landscaped platform that spans approximately 1,200 square meters
