About Gandhi Smriti

Gandhi Smriti is a national memorial in New Delhi, dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. It is located in the Old Birla House at 5, Tees January Marg, where Gandhi lived from 9 September 1947 until his assassination on 30 January 1948. This historic site preserves the room where he stayed, his personal belongings, gardens, and the prayer ground where he was shot, making it a place of deep historical and emotional significance. The house was acquired by the Government of India in 1971 and opened to the public as a memorial on 15 August 1973. Gandhi Smriti showcases exhibits on his life, teachings, and legacy, and attracts visitors from around the world who wish to reflect on his philosophy of non‑violence, truth, and peace.

Architecture of Gandhi Smriti

Gandhi Smriti showcases a simple colonial-modern style, originally built as a private bungalow by the Birla family in the early 20th century during British rule. The house gained historical importance when Mahatma Gandhi lived here from 1947 to 1948. After independence, the Government of India converted it into a memorial in 1973.The building is made of brick masonry, lime plaster, and locally sourced stone, featuring open verandahs, functional rooms, and a practical layout. The memorial preserves the original interiors and exteriors, with pathways and gardens that trace Gandhi’s last movements. Its design also reflects early 20th-century residential engineering, suited to Delhi’s climate, combining simplicity, functionality, and historical preservation.
