About Lodhi Gardens
The history of Lodi Garden dates back to 1444 AD, the tomb of Muhammad Shah, ruler of the Sayyid dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, was built here by his son, Ala-ud-Din Alam Shah, the last ruler of the dynasty. An important tomb in the garden is that of Sikandar Lodi of the Lodi dynasty, which was built by his son Ibrahim Lodi in 1517. It is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a serene and picturesque environment with historical monuments.
Architecture of Lodhi Gardens
Lodhi Garden is spread over an area of more than 90 acres and has several structures dating back to the 15th century that display splendid architectural beauty. The mausoleum of Mohammad Shah has features of Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. Composed of eight small domed structures or chhatris, each decorated with lotus finials, ornate shikharas at the corners, a massive central dome and an octagonal chamber, it is a sight to behold.
Interesting facts about Lodhi Gardens
- The tomb of Muhammad Shah, the second last monument to the emperors of the Sayyid dynasty, is the oldest of the mausoleums in the garden, built in 1444 by Ala-ud-Din Alam Shah as a tribute to Muhammad Shah.
- There is a beautiful 16th-century stone bridge known as Athapula or the Eight Pier Bridge, which was constructed during the reign of Emperor Akbar, and had seven arches and was supported by eight pillars.
- New Delhi Municipal Council has put QR codes on 100 species of trees in the gardens. So that any plant can be prevented from cutting.
- The Lodi Garden is the oldest structure of the gardens as well as a fine example of the fusion of Hindu and Islamic styles in architecture.
- With wide avenues and plenty of shady spots, Lodhi Garden is an excellent place to enjoy your morning walk, yoga or exercise session.
