About Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah

Located in Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin is the dargah (mausoleum) of one of the world's most famous Sufi saints, Nizamuddin Auliya (1238 - 1325 CE). Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, whose full name was Sheikh Nizamuddin Mahmud Ahmed, was born in 1238 in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, India. He moved to Delhi during his youth and became a disciple of the prominent Sufi saint Hazrat Fariduddin Ganjshakar, also known as Baba Farid. Nizamuddin Auliya's teachings focused on spiritual love, devotion and the pursuit of divine knowledge. The shrine of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya was established in the early 14th century after his death in 1325. His disciple and close associate, Amir Khusrau was instrumental in the construction of the dargah complex. Amir Khusro was not only a devoted follower of Nizamuddin Auliya but also a renowned poet, musician and scholar. Over the centuries, the Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah has not only become a site of religious importance, but has also become a center of cultural exchange, art and music. The Qawwali sessions held at the dargah on Thursdays have become particularly famous and attract visitors from various walks of life.

Architecture of Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah

The architecture of Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah is a mixture of Islamic, Indo-Persian and Sufi styles. The dargah complex includes various structures, including the tombs of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and Amir Khusro, as well as other smaller tombs, courtyards and prayer areas. The dargah is surrounded by a marble courtyard and covered with intricate jaalis (translated lattice walls). The main tomb of Aulia is an octagonal structure with intricate decorative elements.
