Kolkata's Purple Line Metro project has achieved a significant milestone as tunnelling progressed beneath the Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC), part of the iconic Kolkata Race Course established in 1847. The first TBM, named Durga, began digging the tunnel towards the Esplanade on July 10, 2025, and reached the RCTC by the end of November after excavating about 600 metres.
◷ 2026-01-08 | ☍ Swarajya MargKolkata Metro Railway has announced that on New Year's Eve, December 31st, eight additional trains will be operated on the Blue Line for the convenience of city residents and tourists. These additional trains will include four up and four down trains between Dakshineswar and Shahid Khudiram stations, with one train extending to Dum Dum to facilitate passenger movement. The first train from Dakshineswar to Shahid Khudiram will depart at 9:40 pm, followed by trains at 9:52 pm, 10:05 pm, and 10:18 pm. Return trains from Shahid Khudiram to Dakshineswar are scheduled at 9:54 pm, 10:04 pm, and 10:17 pm, with the last additional train departing from Shahid Khudiram to Dum Dum at 10:30 pm.

On New Year's Eve, eight special services will run on the Blue Line after 9:40 PM. These include four northbound and four southbound trains. These extra services will run between Dakshineswar and Shahid Khudiram. From south to Shahid Khudiram, the extra trains will depart at 9:40 PM, 9:52 PM, 10:05 PM, and 10:18 PM. In the other direction, from Shahid Khudiram to Dakshineswar, the trains are scheduled for 9:54 PM, 10:04 PM, and 10:17 PM. Additionally, a special service will run from Shahid Khudiram to Dum Dum at 10:30 PM, providing an extra option for northbound passengers. All eight special services will commence after 9:40 PM, extending the Blue Line's operating hours for the day.

This new line is part of a broader expansion of services across the metro network, aimed at better meeting the needs of commuters in the city. The Kolkata Metro is improving public transport by running 40 trains at 21-minute intervals on the Purple Line on Saturdays. The Green Line will also see the introduction of 16 additional trains, taking the total to 202 trains, while the Yellow Line will have 120 trains on weekdays. The Orange Line aims to operate six days a week until new rakes arrive in the future.
