Green Line History, Facts & Expansion
- The Green Line, also known as the East-West Metro, runs from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V.
- It is about 16.6 km long with 12 stations.
- The first section, Salt Lake Sector V-Salt Lake Stadium, opened on 13 February 2020.
- The underwater section between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan, India's first under-river metro tunnel, opened on 6 March 2024.
- Howrah station, about 33 m below ground, is the deepest metro station in India.
- The Sealdah-Esplanade stretch opened on 22 August 2025, making the line continuous.
- It interchanges with the Blue Line at Esplanade and serves Howrah and Sealdah railway stations.
- The underwater tunnel is about 520 m under the Hooghly river.
- The line uses BEML-built trains.
- Salt Lake Sector V serves Kolkata's IT hub.
- Construction faced delays due to building damage in Bowbazar.

Sector V-Salt Lake Stadium opened on 13 February 2020, extended to Phoolbagan in October 2020.
