- Kolkata Metro Line 3, also known as Joka-Esplanade Metro, is an upcoming metro line that will significantly expand Kolkata's metro network.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Joka-Tartala section, including Joka metro station, of the Purple Line of the Kolkata Metro on 30 December 2022.
- The line runs on a two-track system, which ensures safe and efficient movement of trains.
- The Purple Line features a combination of elevated and underground tracks, providing a diverse and interesting commuting experience.
- In the future, there are plans to extend this route by 15.08 kilometers from Joka in the south to Esplanade in the north and by 3.39 kilometers from Joka to Diamond Park.
- It will connect Kolkata Metro Line 1 at Park Street in central Kolkata and run parallel to Esplanade in central Kolkata where it will also connect Kolkata Metro Line 2. Line 3 is being constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited.

Phase II extension of Kolkata Metro's Purple Line
The Kolkata Metro Purple Line extension is expected to be completed by late 2028 or early 2029. The line will connect to the Blue Line at Park Street in central Kolkata and run parallel to the Blue Line until Esplanade, where it will also connect to the Green Line. Approximately 8.5 kilometres (5.3 mi) of the project will be elevated, and the remaining 6.32 kilometres (3.93 mi) will be underground.

Metro Railway Kolkata has launched a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on the underground portion of its Blue Line. The move is aimed at improving energy efficiency and ensuring commuter safety during unexpected power outages.
Metro Railway Kolkata has invited bids for a major infrastructure modernization project costing ₹345.76 crore. The first phase of the project will include replacement and upgrade of equipment at 750V DC traction substations, replacement and upgrade of third rail and power cables, and upgrade of 11 kV auxiliary substations to 33 kV auxiliary substations.
