About Zafar Mahal

Zafar Mahal, located near the Qutub Minar complex in Delhi’s Mehrauli area, is the last significant palace built by the Mughal dynasty, representing the final years of the empire. It was initially constructed during the reign of Emperor Akbar Shah II in the early 19th century, and later expanded by his son Bahadur Shah II (Zafar) around 1847–48 CE with the addition of the Elephant Gate and ceremonial halls. Spread over approximately 1.5–2 hectares, the complex served as a seasonal retreat and a venue for official ceremonies. Key features include the red sandstone façade, arcaded corridors, open courtyards, and the adjacent Moti Masjid, reflecting the late Mughal architectural style and cultural traditions. Today, Zafar Mahal is an important historical site in Delhi, showcasing the architectural, cultural, and political legacy of the last Mughal rulers.

Architecture of Zafar Mahal

Zafar Mahal exemplifies late Mughal architecture with a restrained ornamental style characteristic of the 19th century. Commissioned by Bahadur Shah Zafar around 1842–1847 during the waning years of Mughal rule, the Mahal incorporates earlier Mughal architectural motifs while reflecting resource constraints of the era. The structure was constructed using red sandstone and marble, with inlay work and decorative arches highlighting the emperor’s taste for simplicity paired with elegance. Engineering elements include domed pavilions for ventilation and natural cooling, and carefully proportioned courtyards to maintain symmetry. Archaeological studies indicate that the Mahal integrated pre-existing Mughal garden layouts, symbolizing continuity of imperial traditions while adapting to reduced scale and resources.
