Mumbai Monorail Metro Line 1 Overview
Mumbai Monorail Line 1 is India's first operational monorail, running about 19.5 km from Chembur to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (Jacob Circle) via Wadala with 17 stations. The first phase opened in February 2014 and the full line in March 2019. Services were suspended from 20 September 2025 for a major upgrade with CBTC signalling and new trains, and a restart was being prepared in late 2026. Line 1 History, Facts & Expansion
- Mumbai Monorail is the first operational monorail in India.
- Phase 1, Chembur-Wadala Depot (about 8.9 km, 7 stations), opened on 2 February 2014.
- Phase 2, Wadala Depot-Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk, opened on 3 March 2019, completing the roughly 19.5 km line.
- The line is owned by MMRDA, which took over operations after ending the earlier contractor arrangement in 2018.
- Passenger services were suspended from 20 September 2025 for safety and system upgrades.
- The upgrade includes CBTC signalling and 10 new Made-in-India trains along with refurbished older rakes.
- A skywalk at Mahalaxmi is being built to link the Monorail with the Aqua Line and suburban rail.
- Trains originally used were built by Scomi Engineering of Malaysia.
- The line runs above the Eastern Express Highway area, Wadala and Lower Parel.
- Ridership remained well below projections, at around 15,000-20,000 per day.
- The new trains for the upgrade were built in India by Medha Servo Drives.
