Red Line History, Facts & Expansion

  • The Red Line is an elevated and underground metro line currently under construction.
  • It will connect Mira Bhayandar, Dahisar East, Andheri East and CSIA Terminal 2 (Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport).
  • This line will cover a total distance of approximately 31.05 km and will serve 23 stations.
  • The first 9.75 km section of the Red Line connecting Dahisar East to Aarey was inaugurated on April 2, 2022.
  • The second phase (Aarey to Gundavili) was inaugurated on January 19, 2023.
  • The line is being developed in three sections: Line-7, Line-7A and Line-9.
  • Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) owns the Red Line.
  • Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation (MMMOCL) operates and maintains all Mumbai Metro services on MMRDA-owned lines.
  • The Red Line is partially financed through official development assistance (ODA) loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the New Development Bank (NDB).

Metro Line 9 (Red Line) Extension

Line 9 received approval from the Maharashtra government in September 2018. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone in December 2018 along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Line 9 which is an extension of Line 7 will connect Dahisar East to Mira Bhayander. It will be 11.38 km long and will have 8 stations. This line will be different from other metro lines as it will run on a double-decker bridge. There will be a flyover on the first deck and the metro will run on the second deck. It will provide interconnectivity between the Western Express Highway, Western Line and Mumbai Metro (Line 2 and Line 7). Line 9 is expected to open by 2026.
