Bangalore Metro Purple Line Overview
The Purple Line is the longest operational corridor of Bengaluru's Namma Metro, running about 43.5 km from Whitefield (Kadugodi) to Challaghatta with 37 stations. It crosses the city east to west through K.R. Puram, Indiranagar, M.G. Road, Majestic, Vijayanagar and Kengeri. The first section opened on 20 October 2011, and the full line was completed on 9 October 2023. Purple Line History, Facts & Expansion
- The Purple Line's first section, Baiyappanahalli to M.G. Road, opened on 20 October 2011, making it the first operational stretch of Namma Metro.
- It is about 43.5 km long with 37 stations: 31 elevated, 5 underground and 1 at grade.
- The K.R. Puram-Whitefield (Kadugodi) section opened on 26 March 2023.
- The Baiyappanahalli-K.R. Puram and Kengeri-Challaghatta gaps opened on 9 October 2023, completing the line.
- Its underground section between M.G. Road and Magadi Road, opened in April 2016, was the first underground metro section in South India.
- Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Station (Majestic) is the main interchange with the Green Line.
- The line will interchange with the Pink Line at M.G. Road and the Blue Line at K.R. Puram.
- Trains on the Purple Line run as 6-coach sets built by BEML.
- The line is operated by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
- It serves the Whitefield IT corridor, Indiranagar, M.G. Road, Cubbon Park, Vidhana Soudha and Kengeri.
- Initially there were no toilets at Namma Metro stations; the first opened on 21 June 2013 after public demand.
- Its depots are at Baiyappanahalli, Mysuru Road and Kadugodi.
Namma Metro Purple Line Phase-wise Expansion
Phase 1 (2011-2016) (Completed)
Baiyappanahalli-M.G. Road opened on 20 October 2011, Mysuru Road-Magadi Road in November 2015, and the underground M.G. Road-Magadi Road section on 30 April 2016.
Phase 2 (2021-2023) (Completed)
Mysuru Road-Kengeri opened on 30 August 2021; K.R. Puram-Whitefield on 26 March 2023; Baiyappanahalli-K.R. Puram and Kengeri-Challaghatta on 9 October 2023.
Phase 2A/2B Integration (Under construction)
The Blue Line will interchange at K.R. Puram; the Pink Line at M.G. Road.
Future: Whitefield-Hoskote and Challaghatta-Bidadi (Proposed)

- Kempegowda Majestic- Near KSR Bengaluru City Railway Station
- Baiyappanahalli- Near Baiyappanahalli Railway Station
- Whitefield (Kadugodi)- Near Whitefield Railway Station
No, you cannot go directly to Kempegowda International Airport (KIAL) by taking the Purple Line of Namma Metro. However, you can take the Purple Line to Krishnarajapuram (KR Puram) metro station and then board the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) Airport Shuttle Bus (KIA series) to reach the airport.
In the future, the Purple Metro will be extended eastwards to Hosakote in Bengaluru Rural district and westwards to Bidadi in Ramanagara district.
To change from Purple Line to Green Line in Bangalore, go to Majestic (Nadaprabhu Kempegowda) Metro Station, which is the only interchange between the two lines.
