Interesting facts about Hyderabad Metro Red line

  • The Hyderabad Metro Red Line, also known as Corridor 1, began operations on 29 November 2017. This was the first operational line of Hyderabad Metro.
  • The line is 29.21 km long and spans 27 stations from Miyapur to LB Nagar.
  • A special purpose vehicle company, L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (L&TMRHL), was set up by construction company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to develop the Hyderabad Metro Rail project.
  • Trains arrive every 5–10 minutes during peak hours and every 10–15 minutes during non-peak hours, providing a frequency tailored to passenger needs.
  • The Red Line is planned to be extended beyond both its terminals under the second phase of the metro development project. From LB Nagar it is being extended to Hayat Nagar, while from Miyapur it will connect Patancheru.

Hyderabad Metro Red Line Extension in Phase 2

The Hyderabad Metro's Red Line, which currently operates from Miyapur to LB Nagar, is proposed for expansion under Phase 2. Under this plan, the Red Line will be extended by about 12 km from Miyapur to Patancheru and 5 km from LB Nagar to Hayathnagar.

7 new stations will be built between Miyapur to Patancheru and 4 new stations between LB Nagar to Hayathnagar. It will be completely elevated.

Also, it will facilitate interchange with other metro lines. The project is targeted to be completed by 2028.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has written to Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy, seeking his intervention to expedite the central government's final approval for the long-pending Phase 2 of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project. In the letter to the Union Minister, Revanth Reddy stated that the central government had granted in-principle approval to the project through a letter dated January 15, 2026. That letter also proposed the formation of a joint committee of central and state officials, with Telangana nominated to nominate two members. This joint committee will oversee the transfer process for Phase 1 of the Hyderabad Metro.

The Telangana government has decided to expedite the process of acquiring the Phase-I project of the Hyderabad Metro Rail from Larsen & Toubro and expedite the formalities to complete the acquisition as soon as possible. On September 25, the Telangana government signed an agreement with L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (LTMHRL) for the complete acquisition of the existing Phase-I of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project after L&T decided to exit the project due to mounting losses. Under the agreement, the state government agreed to assume L&T's existing debt of around Rs 13,000 crore as well as return Rs 2,000 crore to the company as a one-time settlement of its equity investment.

Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) has moved to strengthen its rolling stock capacity by launching a plan to procure 60 additional metro coaches, although approval for the second phase of the project is still awaited. The government agency has sought government approval to issue a tender for the new six-coach train sets, and intends to take this step without linking the purchase to the approval of the second phase.

Union urban affairs minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Tuesday said that the Centre will take a call on the Telangana government’s proposal for 162-km metro route expansion in Hyderabad. Speaking to media persons, Khattar stated that in the coming days the Centre and the Telangana government will jointly operate the project in a 50:50 joint venture (JV) model. He was in Hyderabad to attend the regional meeting of urban development ministers of the South-West states on Tuesday.
